The routes that matter

Sri Lanka's rail network is slow, scenic, and frequently delayed — here's how to navigate it honestly.

🚂 Kandy → Ella (Highland Line)
Most scenic High demand
Duration: 6–7 hrs (often 8+) Departures: ~4 daily 1st class: ~LKR 800 Unreserved 2nd: LKR 120

This is the famous hill-country route through tea estates. 1st and 2nd class observation carriages sell out weeks ahead. The honest move: buy an unreserved 2nd class ticket (no booking needed), board early at Kandy, and stand by the open door between carriages for the best views. Delays of 1–2 hours are normal — don't plan a tight connection at Ella.

🚂 Colombo → Kandy (Main Line)

The intercity express (departing Colombo Fort around 07:00 and 15:45) is air-conditioned and reliable. Regular trains are slower but fine. Book intercity seats in advance at Fort station or via 12Go Asia. 3rd class is incredibly cheap and an authentic experience.

💡 Avoid the 08:30–09:30 departures on weekdays — heavily used by commuters from suburbs.
🚂 Colombo → Galle → Matara (Coastal Line)

The coastal line hugs the Indian Ocean for stretches — genuinely beautiful. No reservation system; all seats unreserved. Gets extremely crowded on weekends and holidays. Weekday mornings are best. The train passes right along the beach near Hikkaduwa.

🚂 Colombo → Trincomalee / Batticaloa (Northern Line)

For east-coast destinations, the overnight train to Trincomalee or Batticaloa is practical — sleep on the train, arrive in the morning. Sleeper berths must be booked in person at Colombo Fort up to 10 days ahead. No online booking available for sleepers.

Bus network

Where trains don't go

Buses reach everywhere trains don't, and are often faster — if you can handle the driving.

🚌 CTB vs. Private buses

Government CTB buses are slower and cheaper. Private (semi-luxury) buses are faster, more comfortable, and only slightly more expensive. For long routes, private is worth it. Avoid "express" buses that still stop everywhere.

💡 Private air-con buses from Colombo to Galle cost ~LKR 200 and run every 30 mins from Bastian Mawatha terminal.
🚌 Colombo Fort → Ella by bus
Change at: Badulla or Wellawaya Total: ~7 hrs Cost: ~LKR 400

Faster than the train but less scenic. Take a Colombo–Badulla express, change at Badulla for Ella. Mountain roads are winding — take travel sickness tablets if needed.

🚌 Galle → Mirissa / Tangalle
Frequency: Every 20–30 mins Cost: LKR 60–120

No train south of Matara. Buses are the only option and run frequently along the south coast highway. Flag down from the roadside — no bus station needed.

🚌 Night buses to the north
Colombo → Jaffna: ~7 hrs overnight Cost: LKR 800–1,200

Overnight buses to Jaffna depart Colombo around 21:00–23:00 and arrive by morning. Semi-luxury overnight buses are comfortable and a good option since the northern train line is slower.
