Sri Lanka doesn't have a digital nomad visa. Here's how people actually stay long-term.
Most visitors get a 30-day Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) on arrival or online. Cost: USD 35. Apply at eta.gov.lk — the official site, not third-party services that charge more.
At the Department of Immigration in Colombo (Battaramulla office). Book online, arrive early. Takes 1–3 days. Cost: ~LKR 15,000. You'll need a hotel booking or rental agreement as proof of address.
Possible but more scrutinized. Same process. Community reports suggest you need a compelling reason — studying, medical treatment, or a clear departure plan.
Leave and re-enter for a fresh 30-day ETA. Most common border: fly to Colombo from Malé (1.5 hrs). Check current rules as re-entry policies have changed — confirm before booking.
If you have a genuine business reason, a business visa (issued by your local Sri Lankan embassy) allows longer stays. Requires company documentation and is harder to obtain remotely.
Monthly budget for a comfortable nomad lifestyle: $800–1,200 USD. Breakdown: rent $300–500, food $200–350, transport $50–100, SIM/internet $20–30, activities $100–200.
